The Knife: Ruby’s Demon-Killing Blade

The demon-killing knife in Supernatural, commonly referred to as simply “the Knife” is definitely one of the most useful (and interesting) weapons that have come into the Winchesters’ arsenal. The knife first appears in the season 3 premiere along with the introduction of the demon Ruby.

SAM: Bobby, that knife – what kind of blade can kill a demon?

BOBBY: Yesterday, I would have said there was no such thing.

DEAN: I’m just gonna ask it again – who was that masked chick? Actually, the more troubling question would be, how come a girl can fight better than you?

So where did the concept of this knife originate from?

The Colt and Samuel Colt

The Colt is probably the most iconic weapon in Supernatural’s history. Not only is it one hardcore killing machine, but it also has some of the coolest lore behind it.

Back in 1835, when Halley’s comet was overhead, the same night those men died at the Alamo. They say Samuel Colt made a gun. A special gun. He made it for a hunter, a man like us only on horseback. Story goes he made thirteen bullets, and this hunter used the gun a half dozen times before he disappeared, the gun along with him… They say… they say this gun can kill anything.
